Carved White Jade Snuff Bottle, 18th Century

Roll over for video transcript Fine snuff bottles are exquisite miniature works of Asian art, long favored by collectors drawn to their beauty and significance in the history of Chinese culture. Snuff bottles played a practical role in refined society when smoking was banned but sniffing tobacco was condoned. Originally reserved for the royal court and noblemen, their use spread more broadly over time and the snuff bottle became a subtle but potent signifier of wealth, power and good taste. Collectors of snuff bottles value fine materials such as jade, amber, agate, carved cinnabar and reverse painted glass. This white jade 18th century piece is decorated on all sides with intricate carvings. Round medallions and oval panels enclose images of gourds and vines. Completed by a mother-of-pearl stopper, it stands just over two inches tall and is estimated at $3,000-$4,000. Come to Michaan's Auctions on February 10 for a chance to buy Carved White Jade Snuff Bottle, 18th Century at auction!
