The selection of furniture and decorative arts encompass the widest category of antiques and collectibles of any department at Michaan’s. European and American furniture, clocks, ceramics, glass, silver, lighting, works of decorative art, memorabilia, textiles and rugs are just a few of the treasures found every month at Michaan’s estate auctions. Many periods are reflected, going as far back as the sixteenth century.
Period furniture abounds from Bay Area estates, meeting the collecting needs of a variety of buyers from around the world. French offerings include Louis XIV to Louis XVI, Empire, Louis Philippe, Napoleon III, Art Nouveau and Art Deco; English often encompasses William and Mary, George I to the III, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian; American styling is quite diverse with Federal, Classical Revival, Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco; and Italian based collections have been noted from Rococo to Neoclassical.
Fine silver has consistently proven to be a strong bidder draw for the Furniture and Decorative Arts Department. Selections have included hollowware, tea service pieces, cocktail implements, decanters and formal flatware sets. The record of success has most notably been evidenced in silver offerings of Tiffany & Co. and Arthur Bond, as well as Chinese and Japanese export silver.
Mid-century modern furniture styles were mainly influenced by international architecture between the mid-1930s and the mid-1960s. This development showed the invention of new furniture pieces with organic curves, geometric shapes and ergonomic functionality. We offer cutting edge mid-century modern furniture to give your home flare with a traditional approach.
Michaan’s furniture and decorative arts are offered in monthly Gallery Auctions as well as in regularly scheduled Annex Auctions.
