Grant Wood “January” Lithograph

Roll over for video transcript This intriguing lithograph, titled “January,” is by Grant Wood, painter of “American Gothic,” the portrait of a midwestern farm couple that ranks among the world’s most famous paintings. This lithograph, which is estimated at $3000-$5000, incorporates all facets of Grant Wood’s genius. Sly humor and a sense of mystery infuse his brilliant compositions with layers of meaning, and his impeccable technique was unmatched by any other American artist of his time. When these elements are considered together, it is clear that each of Grant Wood’s works is a quiet masterpiece. In this piece, infinite rows of jaunty snow-capped haystacks form a pattern reminiscent of an M.C. Escher painting. A trail of curious footprints warms the frozen landscape with signs of life.  “January” is one of two excellent Grant Wood lithographs in the April 7th sale.
