Video Highlight

American Queen Anne Maple High Chest, circa 1740-1770

Roll over for video transcript This mid-18th century maple highboy is a superb example of American colonial furniture. Its curving lines and distinctive scallop shell decoration are characteristic of the Queen Anne style, a leading design movement in the 1700s. The light and graceful beauty of Queen Anne furniture was a clear departure from the heavy, straight-backed designs that dominated English furniture for centuries. Queen Anne style furnishings and decorations have remained popular in elegant traditional interiors ever since their introduction. Estimated at $3,500-$4,500, this lovely piece is bound to attract many collectors of original early American furniture. Join us on February 10 for a chance to buy American Queen Anne Maple High Chest, circa 1740-1770 at auction!

Queen Anne Maple highboys, a mahogany Federal “lolling” chair, an American Chippendale mahogany chest and a William and Mary high chest are among the 18th century furniture pieces offered. Asian art treasures include russet and white carved jade, Buddhist objects, Japanese bronze and silver, and fine snuff bottles of amber and white jade. Decorative collectibles in this auction also include Rookwood pottery, Gorham sterling and a bronze compote from Louis C. Tiffany Furnace, Inc. Among the fine art highlights are a small Surrealist sculpture by Ernest Trova (1927-2009), an Impressionist view of New England by Sam Barber, and an early California still life by Alice B. Chittenden (1859-1944). A 1959 abstract mixed media piece by international avant-garde artist Christo Coetzee (1929-2000) is featured. Mid-century female portraits by Lai Kui Fang (b. 1936) would make the perfect finishing touch in a Hollywood Regency interior. Gifts of jewelry are plentiful in February, from gold and sterling silver to gemstones and fine timepieces. Tiffany & Co. cufflinks and a Mikimoto pearl necklace will be offered. 2751 Todd Street, Alameda, CA 94501 Michaan's Auctions info@michaans.com false MM/DD/YYYY
